Miscellaneous Poems 820
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "After the death of the Second Rank Lady of the Retired Emperor, when people composed ten poems"
This is the fourth of the ten. Adding one more to the mounds at the foot of Funaoka, we have made you one of the people of the past, the poet says. Funaoka was a burial ground north of the capital, and in the new mound added there he feels the sorrow that the departed has already become part of the past.
First line, “Funaoka no”: Funaoka, a burial ground north of the capital.
Second line, “susono no tsuka no”: of the graves at the foot of the hill.
Third line, “kazu soete”: adding one to their number.
Fourth line, “mukashi no hito ni”: into one who has passed away.
Fifth line, “kimi o nashitsuru”: we have made you so, closing in the attributive with a sigh.
