Miscellaneous Poems 826
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "After the death of the Second Rank Lady of the Retired Emperor, when people composed ten poems"
This is the last of the ten. Even from those gathered to remember her, I must part once the rites are over, and thinking of that day ahead, my tears fall, the poet says. The sorrow of death is joined by the parting of the survivors, foreshadowing the scattering told in the next headnote.
First line, “ato shinobu”: remembering the departed.
Second line, “hito ni sae mata”: sae is even; even from those who remember.
Third line, “wakaru beki”: must part.
Fourth line, “sono hi o kanete”: kanete is in advance.
Fifth line, “chiru namida kana”: kana is exclamatory, lamenting the falling tears.
