Headnote: "Reply"
This is Fujiwara no Nagenori's reply. Having parted even from you, from today I truly have nothing to console me, he writes. Answering 'kinō ni sae mo' with 'kimi ni sae,' he expresses his feeling for Saigyō, who had been a support during his mother's rites.
First line, “kimi ni sae”: even from you, answering 'kinō ni sae mo' in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Second line, “tachiwakaretsutsu”: parting, taking up 'mata wakaretsutsu.'
Third line, “kyō yori zo”: zo is answered by keru in the fifth line.
Fourth line, “nagusamu kata wa”: any means of consolation.
Fifth line, “ge ni nakarikeru”: ge ni is truly; closing the zo construction in the attributive.
