Miscellaneous Poems 838
Headnote: "Reply"
This is the first of Saigyō's replies to Jakuzen's five, answering 833. Not pushing my way into your mugwort-grown home so as not to spill the dew there, your tears, is that not also a way of calling on you? he says, answering that his not coming was itself an act of consideration.
First line, “wakeirite”: pushing in through the grass.
Second line, “yomogi ga tsuyu o”: taking up 'tsuyu shigeki yomogi ga moto' in 833; the dew hints at Jakuzen's tears.
Third line, “kobosaji to”: ji is negative intention, not to spill it.
Fourth line, “omou mo hito o”: thinking so, of you.
Fifth line, “tou ni arazu ya”: ya is rhetorical; is it not calling on you?
