Headnote: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply. The moon did not shine in but passed along its cloudy road because your heart, not waiting for it, showed plainly in the sky, he says. Taking up 'moonlight' and 'sky' from the preceding poem, he playfully turns it about: I did not call because you were not waiting.
First line, “sashiirade”: de is negative, not shining in; the moon shining in joined to a visitor coming in.
Second line, “kumoji o yokishi”: kumoji is the path through the clouds and yoku to avoid; it avoided that path.
Third line, “tsukikage wa”: taking up 'tsukikage no' of the preceding poem, standing for Saigyō himself.
Fourth line, “matanu kokoro zo”: your heart that was not waiting; zo is answered by keru in the fifth line.
Fifth line, “sora ni miekeru”: sora is a pivot word joining the sky and plainly, taking up 'soradanome.'
