Headnote: "On behalf of another, I sent this as well"
Like the preceding poem, this was sent the day after Shōmyō's service, composed on behalf of another person. The sorrow of having been left out of the Buddha's assembly long ago was cleared away and the heart fulfilled in yesterday's garden of the Law, the poet says, again praising the service by laying it over the Buddha's preaching.
First line, “inishie ni”: long ago, in the Buddha's time, taking up mukashi in the preceding poem.
Second line, “moreken koto no”: of having been left out; ken is conjecture about the past.
Third line, “kanashisa wa”: the sorrow.
Fourth line, “kinō no niwa ni”: in yesterday's garden of the service, taking up 'nori no niwa.'
Fifth line, “kokoro yukiniki”: kokoro yuku is for the heart to be fulfilled; niki marks completion in the past.
