Headnote: "Expressing my thoughts through wisteria"
The topic is expressing one's feelings through wisteria. At the death of one reborn in paradise, Amida Buddha was said to come in welcome riding a purple cloud. Only by hanging wisteria on a heart that waits for the west does one come to think, from its purple, of the welcoming cloud, the poet says, entrusting his wish for rebirth to the wisteria flowers.
First line, “nishi o matsu”: waiting for rebirth in the Western Paradise.
Second line, “kokoro ni fuji o”: wisteria on the heart, answering the topic.
Third line, “kakete koso”: kake overlays the hanging of wisteria and setting one's heart on it; koso is answered by me in the fifth line.
Fourth line, “sono murasaki no”: of the purple of the wisteria.
Fifth line, “kumo o omowame”: the purple cloud of Amida's welcome; one would think on it.
