English Translation
To the ringing of
the bell that wakes me from dreams
joining my own voice,
the holy name ten times through
I have called upon the Buddha.
Meaning
Joining my voice to the ringing of the bell that wakes me from my dreams, I have called the Buddha's name ten times.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 871

Headnote: "On calling the Buddha's name at dawn"
The topic is invoking the Buddha's name at dawn. In time with the dawn bell that wakes him from his dreams, the poet called Amida's name ten times; in Pure Land teaching, ten invocations were held enough for rebirth.
Singing of the bell's sound with 'uchisoete' echoes 712 at the head of the miscellaneous section; there the bell was added to brooding thought, while here the voice of prayer is added to the bell.

First line, “yume samuru”: waking from dreams, hinting at waking from the dream of delusion.
Second line, “kane no hibiki ni”: to the ringing of the bell that calls to dawn worship, answering 'dawn' in the topic.
Third line, “uchisoete”: joining, adding to it.
Fourth line, “totabi no mina o”: the holy name ten times, the ten invocations of Amida.
Fifth line, “tonaetsuru kana”: I have called it, answering the invocation of the topic.
