Headnote: "Contemplating the mind"
The topic is the practice of contemplating the true nature of one's own mind. With the darkness of delusion cleared, is the moon that shines clear in the sky of the heart drawing near to the mountains of the west? the poet asks, likening the enlightened mind to the moon and picturing it approaching the Western Paradise.
The poem is included among the Buddhist poems of the Shinkokinshū.

First line, “yami harete”: the darkness of delusion cleared.
Second line, “kokoro no sora ni”: the heart likened to the sky, answering the topic.
Third line, “sumu tsuki wa”: the moon shining clear, a figure for the enlightened mind.
Fourth line, “nishi no yamabe ya”: the western mountains where the moon sets, suggesting the Western Paradise; ya is answered by ran in the fifth line.
