Roma-ji

Hana no ka o tsuranaru sode ni fukishimete satore to kaze no chirasu narikeri

English Translation
The scent of blossoms
into the sleeves of those in rows
it blows and steeps them;
'awaken,' the wind is saying,
as it scatters the flowers.
Meaning
Blowing the fragrance of the blossoms into the sleeves of those seated in rows, the wind scatters them as if to say, awaken.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 878

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The Introductory Chapter"
Again on the Introductory Chapter. Blowing the scent of the blossoms into the sleeves of those seated in rows at the preaching, the wind scatters the flowers as if to say, awaken, the poet says. Taking up the whirling blossoms of the preceding poem, he sees in their scent on the wind the working of the Buddha's teaching.

First line, “hana no ka o”: the scent of the flowers from heaven, taking up 'hana no nioi.'
Second line, “tsuranaru sode ni”: into the sleeves of those seated in rows.
Third line, “fukishimete”: blowing until it steeps them.
Fourth line, “satore to kaze no”: the wind saying awaken, a messenger of the teaching.
Fifth line, “chirasu narikeri”: narikeri marks realization; so it scatters them.
