Headnote: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply. The poems of Tametada left at the house at Tokiwa, words that do not decay though years pass, must be fondly cherished by you in the village of Ōhara, he says. Taking up 'words' from the preceding poem and joining the place name Tokiwa with everlasting, he praises the father's poems as lasting to later ages.

First line, “toshi furedo”: though years pass.
Second line, “kuchinu tokiwa no”: tokiwa is a pivot word joining the place Tokiwa and everlasting.
Third line, “koto no ha o”: the poems, taking up koto no ha; ha, leaf, is related to decay and evergreen.
Fourth line, “sazo shinoburan”: ran is conjecture about the present; how you must cherish them.
Fifth line, “Ōhara no sato”: ending on a noun, the village of Ōhara where the brothers lived.
