Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The sound of the bell borne on the storm at dawn I hear echoing to the depths of my heart, the poet says. The dawn bell calls to worship, and he pictures its sound resounding deep within him along with the storm in a mountain dawn.

First line, “akatsuki no”: of the hour before dawn.
Second line, “arashi ni taguu”: taguu is to accompany.
Third line, “kane no oto o”: the sound of the temple bell; a line of six syllables.
Fourth line, “kokoro no soko ni”: to the depths of the heart.
Fifth line, “kotaete zo kiku”: kotau is to echo; zo is answered by the attributive kiku.
