Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The ice on the marsh where little parsley is picked has melted away, and the village of Sakurai begins to feel like spring, the poet says, painting the arrival of early spring through parsley-picking and melting ice and letting the sakura, cherry, in the place name echo with spring.
First line, “koseri tsumu”: picking little parsley.
Second line, “sawa no kōri no”: of the ice on the marsh.
Third line, “hima taete”: apparently, the ice having wholly melted.
Fourth line, “harumekisomuru”: beginning to feel like spring.
Fifth line, “Sakurai no sato”: ending on a noun, the village name whose sakura, cherry, echoes spring.
