Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The pine that creeps along the rough shore, bent low by the waves, has as its only comfort the osprey that perches on it, the poet says, finding a small solace in solitude in the wave-battered pine and the bird upon it.
First line, “araiso no”: of the shore where rough waves break.
Second line, “nami ni sonarete”: sonaru is to lean, weathered by wind and wave.
Third line, “hau matsu wa”: the pine that creeps along the ground.
Fourth line, “misago no iru zo”: the misago is the osprey; zo is answered by keru in the fifth line.
Fifth line, “tayori narikeru”: tayori is something to rely on; the attributive closing zo.
