The one who dwells here—
how my heart draws up his heart,
in this clear spring's depths:
how, I wonder, does he now
call to mind the days gone by?
- Meaning
- As I draw from this clear spring, I find myself drawing out the heart of the one who lives here. How, I wonder, does he recall the days of old?

Miscellaneous Poems 1043
Headnote: "When the master of the spring had passed away, I visited the one who had inherited the place, and the company composed poems on the topic 'Facing the spring, thinking of the past'"
The master of a house with a spring had died, and when Saigyō visited his successor, the company composed poems on the topic "Facing the spring, thinking of the past." The heart of the one now living there is drawn out and guessed at, as water is drawn from the spring, and the poet wonders how he must be recalling the days of the late master.
The heart of the poem lies in overlaying the clear spring with the person who dwells there, and drawing water with drawing out a heart; the topic of remembering the past is recast as sympathy for the one who now lives in the house.
First line, “sumu hito no”: sumu is a pivot word for "dwell" and "be clear," joining the person living there with the clear spring.
Second line, “kokoro kumaruru”: kumaruru plays on drawing water and divining a heart; ruru is the spontaneous auxiliary, the heart being naturally guessed at.
Third line, “izumi kana”: kana is exclamatory, and the poem breaks here; the spring anchors the associated words "be clear" and "draw."
Fourth line, “mukashi o ika ni”: how, in what way, the past when the late master lived.
Fifth line, “omoiizuran”: ran conjectures the present, guessing at the feelings of the one who now dwells there.
