Headnote: "Reply"
This is Jakunen's reply to Saigyō's poem. Perhaps because of the autumn leaves we saw together on the peak, he says, you remembered me even in blossom time, rejoicing in Saigyō's friendship.
Taking up "where we saw the autumn leaves" and "blossoms in full bloom," he answers with "that we saw together" and "blossom time." His gratitude that the time they shared in autumn remained in his friend's heart into spring is plainly expressed.
First line, “tomo ni mishi”: that we saw together, answering "momiji mishi" in the preceding poem.
Second line, “mine no momiji no”: of the autumn leaves on Kōya's peak.
Third line, “kai nare ya”: ya is a questioning particle answered by the attributive keru in the fifth line, "was it the reward of that?"
Fourth line, “hana no ori ni mo”: even at blossom time, answering "hanazakari" in the preceding poem.
Fifth line, “omoiidekeru”: closing the ya construction, "you have remembered me."
