Over other peaks
the selfsame moon must be shining,
just as it shines here—
yet this sorrow I feel now
must belong to this place alone.

Miscellaneous Poems 1105
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on viewing the moon at a place called Shinsen in Ōmine"
The same moon must shine over every peak, yet the deep feeling he has here must belong to this place, Shinsen, the poet says.
He finds the reason the mountain moon became his life's memory not in the moon itself but in the power of the place. The awareness that the same moon moves one differently according to where it is seen stresses how special the moon is at a sacred site of practice.
First line, “mine no ue mo”: over other peaks too.
Second line, “onaji tsuki koso”: koso is emphatic, answered by the realis rame, leading on concessively.
Third line, “terasu rame”: closing the koso construction, "it must shine, yet."
Fourth line, “tokorogara naru”: owing to the nature of the place.
Fifth line, “aware naru beshi”: beshi is conjectural, "it must be moving."
