Headnote: "On the same journey"
Composed on the same journey through Shimotsuke as the preceding poem. In a brushwood hut where the wind blows roughly, waking in the night is sadder than usual.
Following the brushwood smoke of the preceding poem, this one sings of a night in a brushwood hut on the road. The loneliness of waking alone under a distant sky, roused by the rough wind, is condensed in the single word nezame.
First line, “kaze araki”: where the wind blows rough.
Second line, “shiba no iori wa”: in a hut of brushwood, echoing the brushwood smoke of the preceding poem.
Third line, “tsune yori mo”: more than usual.
Fourth line, “nezame zo mono wa”: zo is emphatic, answered by the attributive keru.
Fifth line, “kanashikarikeru”: closing the zo construction, "how sad it is."
