Miscellaneous Poems 1138
Headnote: "Again, the lady-in-waiting sent this"
The lady in Sanuki sent this further poem to Saigyō. As my sorrows deepen, she writes, I rely on you; do not fail to guide me on the path you promised.
As grief in exile grows, her earnest wish to entrust her salvation in the next life to the recluse Saigyō shows through. "The path we pledged" seems to refer to a promise of guidance on the Buddhist way. It was sent together with 1139, and the two correspond to Saigyō's replies in 1140 and 1141.
First line, “itodoshiku”: ever more, increasingly.
Second line, “uki ni tsukete mo”: in my sorrows.
Third line, “tanomu kana”: kana is exclamatory, "how I rely on you"; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “chigirishi michi no”: of the path we pledged; shi is the attributive of the past ki.
Fifth line, “shirube tagau na”: na is prohibitive, "do not fail me as guide."
