Miscellaneous Poems 1141
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Reply"
This is Saigyō's reply to the lady's poem 1139. Though today you sink in flowing tears, he encourages her, still think of the future when you will rise again.
Taking up her "sink" and "float," he admonishes her that though she is sunk in grief now, the time of deliverance will come; she should trust in a next life where she will rise up through the Buddha's salvation.
First line, “nagareizuru”: flowing forth; the line has an extra syllable.
Second line, “namida ni kyō wa”: in tears, today; "today" is set against "the future" of the fourth line.
Third line, “shizumu tomo”: tomo is a concessive supposition, "even if you sink," answering her "sink."
Fourth line, “ukaban sue o”: the future when you will rise, answering her "float," the deliverance of the next life.
Fifth line, “nao omowanan”: nan expresses a wish, "please still think of it."
