Miscellaneous Poems 1204
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sent from Kōya to the lay monk Jakunen when he was living in Ōhara"
The seventh of the ten. Deep in the mountains, how imposingly the storm sweeps across the treetops of the dark, thickly wooded peak!
Describing the storm's sound through the dark treetops as monomonoshi, "imposing," the poem portrays the overpowering nature of the deep mountains. After the owl's voice in the preceding poem, the frightening sounds of the mountains continue.
First line, “yama fukami”: since the mountains are deep, shared by the series.
Second line, “kogurai mine no”: of the peak dark with trees; the text has kokuraki.
Third line, “kozue yori”: across the treetops.
Fourth line, “monomonoshiku mo”: imposingly, overbearingly.
Fifth line, “wataru arashi ka”: ka is exclamatory, "how the storm sweeps past."
