Miscellaneous Poems 1234
Headnote: "Some time after that, I sent this with someone going there"
Some time later Saigyō sent this to Retired Emperor Sutoku by someone going to Sanuki. Since the day you left, he says, the tears that fall have been my keepsake, and there is not a moment when I forget you.
Since the day of parting he has made his very tears a keepsake of the emperor, thinking of him without cease. Making his own tears, rather than an object, the keepsake reveals the depth of his sorrow. Three replies from a lady-in-waiting follow from 1235.
First line, “sono hi yori”: from that day, when the emperor left the capital.
Second line, “otsuru namida o”: the tears that fall.
Third line, “katami nite”: as a keepsake.
Fourth line, “omoiwasururu”: forgetting.
Fifth line, “toki no ma mo nashi”: not even a moment, thinking of him without cease.
