while I too keep myself hid
from the eyes of all,
never forcing words to come,
all this wearing of my heart.

Miscellaneous Poems 1244
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "One hundred and ten love poems"
How hopeless, the poet says: while I too, not only you, shrink from others' eyes, I never force myself to speak, and only wear my heart away.
Both shrink from others' eyes and so cannot express their feelings, and the poem sings of the pain of merely exhausting the heart. Following the preceding poems, the stage of hidden love continues.
First line, “warinashi ya”: how hopeless, a lament breaking after the first line.
Second line, “ware mo hitome o”: mo means "I too, not only you."
Third line, “tsutsumu ma ni”: while shrinking from them.
Fourth line, “shiite mo iwanu”: not forcing myself to speak.
Fifth line, “kokorozukushi wa”: this wearing down of the heart, the inversion naming what is lamented.
