Miscellaneous Poems 1273
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "One hundred and ten love poems"
How spitefully my tears flow without regard for others' eyes, the poet says; with a heart that cannot endure, all my hiding is in vain.
He resents tears that flow even before others, against his will to hide his love. Like the preceding poem, it takes love's tears as its theme.
First line, “ayaniku ni”: spitefully, unfortunately.
Second line, “hitome mo shiranu”: heedless of others' eyes.
Third line, “namida kana”: kana is exclamatory; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “taenu kokoro ni”: with a heart that cannot endure.
Fifth line, “shinobu kai naku”: my hiding to no avail, the inversion giving the lament.
