English Translation
All through the long night,
as my sleeves fill to the brim
with tears of resentment,
upon my pillow I can hear
the sound of breaking waves.
Meaning
All night long my sleeves brim with tears of resentment, until I hear the sound of waves upon my pillow.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 1287

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "One hundred and ten love poems"
All night his sleeves brim with tears of resentment, until he hears the sound of waves on his pillow, the poet says.
Seeing overflowing tears as water held in the sleeves, the hyperbole of waves heard on the pillow expresses the depth of resentment. Urami, "resentment," seems to echo uramī, "gazing at the bay," creating a link with waves.

First line, “yomosugara”: all night long.
Second line, “urami o sode ni”: tears of resentment, on my sleeves, with an echo of "bay."
Third line, “tatōreba”: as they fill to the brim; the realis with ba gives a definite condition.
Fourth line, “makura ni nami no”: on my pillow, of the waves.
Fifth line, “oto zo kikoyuru”: zo is emphatic, answered by the attributive kikoyuru.
