Kore mo mina mukashi no koto to iinagara nado mono omou chigiri nariken

English Translation
Though it's said that this
all comes from things done before
in a former life—
why was it to be a bond
that would bring such brooding pain?
Meaning
Though they say all this comes from a former life, why must it be a bond that brings me such brooding?
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 1308

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "One hundred and ten love poems"
Though it is said that all this comes from a former life, why should it be a bond that brings such brooding? the poet asks.
Like 1303, it seeks love's suffering in a bond from past lives, yet cannot help asking why it had to be such a painful one.

First line, “kore mo mina”: all this too.
Second line, “mukashi no koto to”: as things of a former life.
Third line, “iinagara”: though one says so.
Fourth line, “nado mono omou”: nado is "why."
Fifth line, “chigiri nariken”: ken conjectures a past cause, "why was it such a bond?"
