Miscellaneous Poems 1340
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "One hundred and ten love poems"
Telling himself "how could such a thing be?" he manages to hide it, but how long will his heart stay composed? the poet wonders.
Refusing to admit he is in love, he feigns calm but fears how long it can last. Echoing "a heart suspect even to myself" in the preceding poem, it sings of the precariousness of a heart trying to deny love.
First line, “saru koto no”: such a thing, being in love.
Second line, “aru beki ka wa to”: ka wa is rhetorical, "could it be so?"
Third line, “shinobarete”: re is spontaneous, "I can keep it hidden."
Fourth line, “kokoro itsu made”: how long will my heart.
Fifth line, “misao naruran”: ran conjectures, "stay composed?"
