Headnote: "At a place by a rock out at sea, where the fishermen were gathering abalone"
Near a rock offshore where fishermen were gathering abalone, Saigyō composed this. At the base of the rocks, all facing one way, they float side by side on the waves and dive for abalone, the chiefs of the fisherfolk.
It concretely depicts the divers, floating in a line all facing one way and diving together. Nami pivots on "in a row" and "waves," overlaying floating side by side with floating on the waves. Like the preceding poem, it captures the fishermen's work realistically.
First line, “iwa no ne ni”: at the base of the rocks.
Second line, “kataomuki ni”: all facing one way.
Third line, “nami ukite”: nami pivots on "in a row" and "waves."
Fourth line, “awabi o kazuku”: diving for abalone.
Fifth line, “ama no muragimi”: muragimi is the chief of the fishermen.
