Miscellaneous Poems 1383
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the island called Tōshi in Ise there is a beach of nothing but white pebbles..."
The beach of Tōshi is all white pebbles because the high waves must have washed the white stones of Sakishima onto it, the poet says.
An imaginative poem tracing the whiteness of Tōshi's beach to pebbles carried by the waves. Sakishima seems to be an island near Tōshi. It is the second in the series on white and black pebbles.
First line, “sakishima no”: apparently the name of an island in Ise.
Second line, “koishi no shiro o”: the white pebbles.
Third line, “takanami no”: the high waves.
Fourth line, “tōshi no hama ni”: on the beach of Tōshi.
Fifth line, “uchiyosetekeru”: they must have cast them ashore, ending on the attributive with feeling.
