Headnote: "When the boats that had been fishing for the fish called katsuo came back because the wind from the offing had turned bad"
When the boats fishing for bonito returned because the wind offshore had turned foul, Saigyō composed this. At Cape Irago the bonito boats float side by side, riding the waves of the hagachi wind as they come in.
It realistically depicts the bonito boats returning together from a rough sea. Full of extra syllables, the poem has a leisurely rhythm that conveys the boats rocking on the waves.
First line, “iragozaki ni”: at Cape Irago in Mikawa; the line has an extra syllable.
Second line, “katsuo tsuribune”: bonito fishing boats.
Third line, “narabi ukite”: floating in a row; the line has an extra syllable.
Fourth line, “hagachi no nami ni”: hagachi seems to be the name of a southerly wind; on its waves.
Fifth line, “ukabitsutsu zo yoru”: zo is answered by the attributive yoru; the line has extra syllables.
