Headnote: "Composed on seeing the moon over Nanakoshi Peak on the way to Kumano"
On the way to Kumano, Saigyō saw the moon over Nanakoshi Peak. As the moon climbs, the clouds around it vanish, and its light lies layered on the peak of Nanakoshi.
The "seven" of Nanakoshi echoes the light "layered," depicting moonlight shining on ridge upon ridge. The sanctity of the moon over Kumano's sacred mountains shows through.
First line, “tachinoboru”: climbing up.
Second line, “tsuki no atari ni”: around the moon.
Third line, “kumo kiete”: the clouds vanishing.
Fourth line, “hikari kasanuru”: layering its light, echoing the "seven" of the peak's name.
Fifth line, “nanakoshi no mine”: the name of a peak in Kumano, ending on a noun.
