Headnote: none
Ashamed before the moon, his heart cannot come forward, for its light lodges in the tears on his sleeves as he gazes, the poet says.
He is ashamed to let the moon see him weeping at it. Following the preceding poem's self-rebuke not to gaze at the moon, it sings of feeling his weakness seen through by the moon reflected in his tears.
First line, “tsuki ni hajite”: ashamed before the moon; the line has an extra syllable.
Second line, “sashiiderarenu”: rare is potential, "unable to come forward."
Third line, “kokoro kana”: kana is exclamatory; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “nagamu ga sode ni”: both the text and the reading line have nagamu ga, taken as "on my sleeves as I gaze."
Fifth line, “kage no yadoreba”: since the light lodges there, the inversion giving the cause of shame.
