One Hundred Poems 1491
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Ten Poems on Snow"
The ninth of the ten poems on snow. He will extend the eaves of his hut against the snow and, should anyone come following the tracks, keep that person to stay.
It shows a heart longing for company: in a snowbound village with no visitors, he would welcome anyone who came. Taking up the lament of 1485 that no one would come through the snow, this one prepares to receive a visitor.
First line, “yuki shinogu”: keeping off the snow, withstanding it.
Second line, “iori no tsuma o”: tsuma is the eaves, "the eaves of the hut."
Third line, “sashisoete”: adding to them, extending them.
Fourth line, “ato tomete kon”: ato tomete means following the tracks, and n is conjecture in attributive form, "who would come."
Fifth line, “hito o todomen”: n expresses intention, "I will keep them here."
