Book One Spring Poems 30
Staying among the mountain cherries, the poet leaves word that if anyone at home asks when he will return, they should be told he will not come back until the blossoms have fallen. The elegant heart that forgets to go home, captivated by flowers, is expressed lightly.
The first line, "back at my home," here means the poet's own house or home place.
The second line, "if anyone should ask," is a hypothesis: if there is someone asking after me.
The third line, "the mountain cherries," are the blossoms the poet is gazing at now, leading into the fourth line.
The fourth line, "must first scatter," uses the emphatic "na" and conjectural "mu": after they will surely have fallen.
The last line, "wait, that is your answer," stacks imperatives, closing as a message entrusted to someone.
