Konu hito o machikaneyama no yobukodori onaji kokoro ni aware to zo kiku
- English Translation
-
For one who does not come
I wait, as on Machikane Hill
the calling bird calls;
with a heart the same as mine
I hear it, deeply moved.
- Meaning
- On Machikane Hill, whose name means weary of waiting, the calling bird cries for one who does not come; sharing its heart, I listen with deep feeling.

Book One Spring Poems 47
Overlaying herself, waiting in vain for someone who does not come, with the calling bird of Machikane Hill whose cry seems to summon someone, the poet hears its voice as sharing her own feeling. The skill of placing "waiting" and "calling" in both the place name and the bird's name shines.
The first line, "for one who does not come," leads into the "waiting" of the second line.
The second line, "machikane," is a pivot word meaning both weary of waiting and Machikane Hill, a famous place in Settsu Province.
The third line, "the calling bird," is a bird whose cry sounds like calling to someone, its identity much debated; its name echoes "one who does not come" in the first line.
The fourth line, "with a heart the same as mine," means with the same heart of waiting for someone.
The last line, "I hear it, deeply moved," closes a kakari-musubi with "zo" and the attributive "kiku."
