Yamazato wa yukiki no michi no mienu made aki no konoha ni uzumorenikeri

English Translation
The mountain village:
so that the paths that come and go
can no longer be seen,
beneath the leaves of autumn
it lies buried now
Meaning
The mountain village lies buried under autumn leaves, so deep that not even the paths people come and go by can be seen.
Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 133

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
This is a poem by Sone no Yoshitada. The paths of a mountain village are so buried in fallen leaves that one cannot see where people come and go.
An unseen path also means that visitors have ceased, and the loneliness of a mountain village in late autumn is folded into the scene of fallen leaves. The sequence moves from the mountain lit by leaves in the preceding poem to a village carpeted with fallen leaves.

The first line, "yamazato wa," means "the mountain village," presenting the theme.
The second line, "yukiki no michi no," means "of the paths people come and go by."
The third line, "mienu made," shows degree: "until they cannot be seen."
The fourth line, "aki no konoha ni," means "by the leaves of autumn," and 135 and 136 in this book also sing of fallen leaves.
The last line, "uzumorenikeri," closes with a note of realization: "it has been buried."
