Se o hayami iwa ni sekaruru takigawa no waretemo sue ni awamu to zo omou
- English Translation

Because the shallows rush,
the torrent checked by a rock
though it splits in two,
shall in the end flow as one —
so I think we two will meet
- Meaning
- The rapids run so fast that the torrent, checked by a rock, splits in two, yet flows together again downstream; so too, though we part now, I am determined that we will meet again in the end.

Book Seven Love Poems I 229
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Just as a swift stream split in two by a rock joins again downstream, the poet resolves that though they must part now, they will surely meet in the future. Entrusted to the rushing water, the passion of love and the determination to reunite ring out powerfully.
The author is Retired Emperor Sutoku, who commissioned the Shikawakashu; the original text attributes it to the Shin-in, the New Retired Emperor. The poem was composed for the Kyuan Hyakushu that Sutoku sponsored, where it is said to have differed in its first and third lines. It was included as poem 77 of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu and chosen by Fujiwara no Teika for both Teika Hachidaisho and Hachidaishu Shuitsu.
The first line, "se o hayami," combines "o" with an adjective stem and "mi" to mean "because the current is swift." The first three lines form a preface leading to "waretemo" (though split).
The second line, "iwa ni sekaruru," uses the attributive passive "ru": checked by a rock. As with the waves dashing on rocks in poem 211 of this book, the rock stands for the obstacles of love.
The third line, "takigawa no," names a torrent rushing like a waterfall.
The fourth line, "waretemo sue ni," overlays the stream splitting in two with lovers parting, leading to the sense that, as the stream rejoins downstream, they will someday meet.
The final line, "awamu to zo omou," forms a kakari-musubi of the volitional "mu," the particle "zo," and the attributive "omou," ending with firm resolve to meet again.
