Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 327
If one could die twice, the poet says, she would die once to see whether the beloved would mourn her. The bold hypothesis of dying twice expresses an urgent wish to test the other's love.
Poem 346 of this book also uses "futatabi" (twice), regretting a world to which one can never return.
The first line, "hito no yo ni" (in this world of men), sets the scene.
The second line, "futatabi shinuru" (to die twice), presents an impossible supposition.
The third line, "mono naraba," is a hypothetical with the irrealis of the copula "nari" and "ba": if that were so.
The fourth line, "shinobikeri ya to," uses "keri" and the questioning "ya": whether he mourned me.
The final line, "kokoromitemashi," ends with the counterfactual "mashi": I would try it.
