Yūmagure ko shigeki niwa o nagametsutsu ko no ha to tomo ni otsuru namida ka

English Translation
In the gloom of dusk,
as I gaze into the garden
thick with leafy trees,
together with the falling leaves
how my tears come falling too
Meaning
In the dimness of dusk, gazing at the garden thick with trees, my tears fall together with the leaves.
Commentary
Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 396

Gazing at a garden thick with trees in the dusk, the poet finds his tears falling together with the scattering leaves. Seemingly a poem from a time of grief at losing someone, it overlays falling leaves with tears and conveys a quiet sorrow.

The first line, "yūmagure," names the dim time of dusk.
The second line, "ko shigeki niwa o," refers to a garden thick with trees.
The third line, "nagametsutsu," uses the continuative "tsutsu": while gazing.
The fourth line, "ko no ha to tomo ni," means together with the falling leaves, echoing "ko" (tree) in the second line.
The final line, "otsuru namida ka," ends with the exclamatory "ka": how my tears fall.
