English Translation
At the old homestead
whom would you have long for the past,
O you plum blossoms,
that you bloom with fragrance still
unforgetting of the past?
Meaning
At this old home, whom do you expect to long for the past, plum blossoms, that you bloom with a fragrance that has not forgotten bygone days?
Commentary
Spring Poems 31

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Plum blossoms at the old home"
At an old home where no one lives any longer, the poet asks for whose sake the plum blossoms bloom with their unchanged scent, as if to make someone long for the past. In the fragrance of flowers blooming in a ruined village with no one left to remember, he feels an even deeper loneliness.
The Ruijū text differs in the second line.

Line 1, "At the old homestead," names a deserted old village.
Line 2: shi is emphatic and ka interrogative, asking whom the flowers would have remember the past.
Line 3 addresses the plum blossoms as the object of the question.
Line 4, "unforgetting of the past," describes the plum's unchanged scent, echoing "the blossoms of long ago" in the preceding poem, 30.
Line 5 concludes the ka construction with the attributive of the conjectural ramu.
