I have spent the day with blossoms;
of the rain of spring,
where its dewdrops find their rest,
let me lodge there, too, I pray.

Spring Poems 54
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Cherry blossoms in the rain"
Saying that again today he has spent the whole day gazing at blossoms, the poet asks to be lent, as his own lodging, the shade of the flowers where the spring rain's dew rests. His reluctance to leave the blossoms is expressed through a conceit linking dew and lodging. Kamo no Mabuchi said the fourth line is in a later manner.
Line 1, "Today once again," shows days given over to blossoms.
Line 2 means spending the day on flowers, closing with the perfective tsu; the poem pauses here.
Line 3, "of the rain of spring," names the topic's rain.
Line 4, "where its dewdrops find their rest," refers to the shade of the blossoms where the dew lodges; Mabuchi called it a later style.
Line 5: namu expresses a wish directed at another. The next poem, 55, ends the same way, and the two pair "lodging of dew" with "lodging of blossoms."
