Spring Poems 86
Headnote: "Blossoms in the evening rain"
The poet describes the branches of a mountain cherry whose flowers have fallen in vain, where only the dew of the evening rain remains. In the dew shining on bare branches he overlays the traces of the fallen blossoms and the loneliness of dusk. Kamo no Mabuchi said the last line is a later style.
The Ruijū and Teika texts differ in the last line. One character in the last line of the base text is hard to read, so the reading tsuyu no nokoreru of the Waka Database text has been adopted.
Line 1 names the flower of the topic.
Line 2: ada ni means vainly or fleetingly, and nishi combines perfective and past.
Line 3 names the branch after the blossoms have fallen.
Line 4 takes up "evening rain" from the topic.
Line 5 ends on the attributive of the resultative ri, leaving a lingering mood. The next poem, 87, also sings of "the dew of the evening rain," and the two form a pair.
