Summer Poems 156
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The hototogisu"
The poet tells how the hototogisu of the Hakone mountains sings every morning in the village beyond. Bringing in a mountain of the eastern provinces familiar to a poet living in Kamakura, he simply portrays the bird's voice heard morning after morning.
The Ruijū text places this poem among "poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions."
Line 1, tamakushige, a "jewelled comb-box," is a pillow word that modifies Hakone because of the shared sound hako ("box").
Line 2 names the Hakone mountains on the border of Sagami and Izu. Against the Yamato place names of the two preceding poems, a mountain of the east appears here.
Line 3 sets the hototogisu as a mountain bird.
Line 4, "in the village over there," shows the distance between mountain and village.
Line 5, "morning after morning sings," is hypermetric. Against the night-singing hototogisu of the preceding poems, this one sings in the morning.
