Summer Poems 166
Headnote: "Pinks"
The poet urges someone who longs to see them to go and look at the pinks blooming on the rocks of Yukishima. With a light rhythm that echoes "go" (yuki) in the place name Yukishima, he conveys the beauty of a delicate flower on hard rock.
The Ruijū text places this poem in the miscellaneous section.
Line 1, yukashikuba, means "if you are drawn to see or know."
Line 2: mase is the imperative of the honorific masu, a courteous urging, and the poem pauses here.
Line 3, Yukishima, is a place name that resonates with "go," echoing yukite mo in line 2; its location is uncertain.
Line 4, "growing from the rocks," contrasts hard stone with a delicate flower.
Line 5 ends on a noun, naming last the flower being recommended. This is the only poem in the summer section on pinks.
