Autumn Poems 194
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed at the beginning of autumn"
The autumn wind blows over the riverbanks of the River of Heaven, where the Herdboy waits for his once-a-year meeting with the Weaver Maid. The approach of Tanabata is announced by the wind over the heavenly riverbank, overlaying the autumn of earth with the love in the heavens in a single scene.
This poem was included in the Shinchokusen Wakashū. Kamo no Mabuchi gave it a double circle.
Line 1, hikoboshi, the Herdboy star, meets the Weaver Maid once a year in the Tanabata legend. He appears again in 196 under the topic "Tanabata."
Line 2 means "waiting for the night of meeting."
Line 3, hisakata no, is a pillow word for "heaven."
Line 4 is the same as line 2 of the preceding poem, 193, so the two poems sing of the same place. In that poem the poet on earth awaited autumn; here the Herdboy in heaven awaits his meeting, so the ones who wait form a pair on earth and in heaven.
Line 5 concludes the binding particle zo with the attributive fuku.
