Who could be the owner,
who wore and then hung up here
these purple trousers?
Though I ask, there's no reply—
just the autumn wind on the moor.

Autumn Poems 215
Headnote: "Thoroughwort"
The poet takes the fragrance of the fujibakama blooming in the fields to be the lingering scent of trousers someone wore and hung up there, and asks who their owner was; the only reply is the autumn wind over the moor. The wit of imagining the garment's owner from the flower's name, "wisteria trousers," joins the loneliness of autumn fields where no answer comes.
The conceit of fujibakama as a garment someone slipped off has a precedent in the Kokin Wakashū poem by the priest Sosei asking whose fujibakama was left in the autumn fields, scenting the air though its owner is unknown; this poem takes up that question and ends with the autumn wind on a moor where no one answers. In the source text consulted, characters at the start of line 2 are missing and have been supplied from the Teika text's kite nugikakeshi.
Line 1, fujibakama, thoroughwort, is one of the seven flowers of autumn and has a fine scent; ran in the headnote is its Chinese name.
Line 2, "wore and hung up," likens the "trousers" (hakama) of the flower's name to a garment.
Line 3: ya is interrogative, asking "who was the owner?", and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "though I ask, there is no answer."
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the autumn wind that blows in place of an answer. The next poem, 216, also sings of fujibakama and its owner, as if answering this unanswered question with the fujibakama of a ruined hut whose master is gone.
