Autumn Poems 232
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on wild geese"
The first geese of autumn, riding the wind over the mountains, part with their wings the white clouds hanging on the peaks. The poet portrays the powerful flight of the first geese arriving from the north together with a majestic mountain scene.
Line 1 means "riding the autumn wind."
Line 2 means "flying over the mountains." The next poem, 233, has the same line 2, so the two stand side by side on geese crossing mountains.
Line 3, hatsukari, are the first geese to arrive that autumn.
Line 4, "parting with their wings," like the geese parting the high clouds in 226, depicts geese making their way through cloud.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the clouds the geese part.
