Keeping watch on fields
in the mountain hut I stay,
morning after morning
I have heard it without fail,
the calling of the stag.
Meaning
Living in a hut to guard the mountain paddies, I have heard morning after morning, without fail, the voice of the stag.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 246

Headnote: "Autumn at a farmhouse"
Living in a hut built to guard the mountain paddies, the poet hears the stag's voice every morning without fail. Imagining life in a watch hut for mountain fields, where the deer that ravage the crops are kept off, he portrays an autumn in the hills enveloped in deer cries.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "On the theme 'Autumn at a farmhouse.'"

Line 1, "keeping watch on mountain paddies," means guarding fields in the hills from birds and beasts. Poem 262 also sings of "the hut that guards the mountain paddies."
Line 2: shi is an emphatic particle, "since I am staying in a hut."
Line 3, "morning after morning," is hypermetric; it is the same word as the opening of 243.
Line 4: tsuru is the attributive of the perfective tsu, "I have heard without fail."
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the voice that came. Taking up the preceding deer sequence, this poem hears the stag's voice within the farmhouse life of the topic.
