on the evening sky that falls
into the twilight,
over mountains of tall trees
the wind of autumn blows.
Meaning

Commentary
Autumn Poems 259

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the theme 'Gazing out from the mountainside'"
As the poet gazes, lost in thought, at the evening sky growing dark, the autumn wind sweeps over the mountains of tall trees. With sky, mountain, and wind, he portrays the broad view of a mountainside at dusk together with a quiet loneliness.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "On the theme 'Gazing at the mountains.'" Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.

Line 1 means "growing dark."
Line 2, "the evening sky," takes up the last line of the preceding poem, 258, "on the evening of the autumn."
Line 3, nagamureba, means "as I gaze lost in thought," presenting the "gazing out" of the theme; it is the same word as the opening of 181.
Line 4 means "on mountains thick with tall trees."
Line 5 concludes the binding particle zo with the attributive fuku; it is the same last line as 225 and others. Against the woods where monkeys shriek in the preceding poem, this one sings of mountains where the autumn wind blows, pairing voice and wind.
