Winter Poems 335
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "A winter night"
Struck by the mountain wind blowing down from Mount Otowa, the little stream flowing by the Ōsaka Barrier has frozen. Linking the poetic places of Mount Otowa and the Ōsaka Barrier, the poet portrays a winter scene in which the cold wind freezes the stream.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "Composed on ice." According to the source's note, the Ruijū and Teika texts give line 2 as yamaoroshi fukite, the Ruijū text gives line 4 as seki no ogawa ni, and the original manuscript, a note in the Ruijū text, and the Teika text give line 5 as kōri watareri. This edition follows the source text. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.
Line 1 names Mount Otowa on the border of Yamashiro and Ōmi, a poetic place.
Line 2 means "the wind blows down from the mountain," the "mountain" of line 1 echoed in yamaoroshi.
Line 3 names the Ōsaka Barrier on the border of Yamashiro and Ōmi.
Line 4 is the little stream flowing near the Ōsaka Barrier.
Line 5 is the same as that of the preceding poem, continuing the scenes of freezing since 331.
